What Harm Can Wisdom Teeth Cause Us?
Wisdom teeth often emerge in abnormal positions because they don’t have enough space in the jaw, causing discomfort to the cheeks and tongue. As they try to find space, they can push against other teeth, sometimes leading to minor crowding. Being located at the back, they are hard to clean, which can result in cavities. Due to their position, conservative treatments like fillings or root canal therapy are often not fully effective.
Because they cannot be properly cleaned, food accumulates around them, leading to gum inflammation, bad breath, and decay in the adjacent second molars.
When they cause inflammation, their position at the corners of the jaw can restrict mouth opening. This can make speaking and eating difficult. The inflammation can result in a painful process that radiates to the teeth, jaw, throat, and ear. When impacted, there is also a risk of cyst formation within the bone.
How Are Impacted Wisdom Teeth Extracted?
The extraction is performed surgically under local anesthesia.
You will not feel any pain during the procedure.
The duration of the procedure varies between 10–30 minutes, depending on the tooth's position.
Stitches are placed in the area after the operation and are removed after one week.
For prophylaxis, you will need to take one course of antibiotics.
You may take painkillers for 1–3 days after the procedure. Any pain you feel can be easily managed with medication.
In the first few days, you may experience slight swelling and limited mouth opening. This depends on the tooth’s position and does not always occur.
Applying ice to the operated area for the first two days helps control potential swelling.
It is recommended to eat soft foods during the first few days.
Using an antibacterial mouthwash is advised to keep the area clean.
You can return to work the day after the operation.
