Clenching Teeth
(Teeth Grinding - Bruxism)
One of the conditions we frequently encounter today due to the stresses life presents is the habit of teeth clenching and grinding. Usually performed unconsciously, teeth clenching or grinding during sleep can cause significant damage to the teeth and joints.
Teeth grinding and clenching cause wear on the tooth surfaces, leading to sensitivity issues and increasing the risk of decay. In advanced cases, this wear results in a loss of vertical dimension, causing both aesthetic and functional problems.
These habits put excessive strain on the jaw joints, potentially causing permanent damage to the joint surfaces. The muscles around the jaw can become fatigued and deformed as well.
Individuals with teeth grinding habits often wake up with headaches, experience jaw fatigue, and have difficulty opening their mouths. Teeth may show signs of wear, sensitivity, surface cracks, tissue loss, and shortening. Additionally, these habits can lead to gum recession.
What Can Be Done to Prevent This Habit?
In this case, there are two treatment alternatives available.
Night Guard: After an examination, a custom-fitted night guard will be made for your mouth to protect your teeth and joints from the damage caused by teeth grinding habits.
Masseter Botox Treatment: By applying Botox to your chewing muscles, you are protected from the destructive effects of teeth grinding. The chewing muscles are controlled to be strong enough for chewing but without causing harm to your joints and teeth. This treatment needs to be repeated every 4-6 months. It does not cause a noticeable aesthetic change in your face, but if your chewing muscles are very swollen and your face has taken on a square shape, it can help you regain a more oval facial contour.
In cases of very severe complaints, we can apply both treatment options together.
| NIGHT GUARD | BOTOX |
| Only protects you while you are wearing it | It protects you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week |
| Using a special appliance may not feel comfortable | It is very comfortable |
| It is a longer-term treatment | It needs to be repeated every 4 to 6 months |
| It is more economical | Since it requires repetition, it can be considered more expensive |
| You cannot use it in social situations | It doesn’t affect your social life at all |
| It also provides protection against teeth grinding (bruxism) | Its effectiveness is lower for teeth grinding (bruxism) |
